Finding the perfect gift for that perfect someone can be stressful this time of year. So many options, so little time. And, then there’s the budget. Being a PR professional definitely has its perks this time of year when it comes to holiday gift giving. How? PR professionals are used to tight deadlines and coming up with creative ideas to entice and delight target audiences – all while keeping to a budget.
We’re also natural planners and lists makers. Ask any PR professional and they’ll tell you they typically have multiple to-do lists on the go – both professionally and personally. And, we are good at multi-tasking! When all of these are applied to our holiday gift giving it makes for a stress-free shopping experience. Here’s some of our top tips to make your holiday gift giving a snap this year.
Early June is usually the official kick-off of the holiday season for most PR professionals. This is when we start to plan and pitch holiday gift guide ideas to long lead media for their November and December issues. Here we provide information and product samples on the latest and greatest products from our clients for the holiday season – along with emerging trends. From that comes inspiration for gifts we should start buying for the upcoming holiday season for those on our list including: the foodie, the makeup junkie, the statement maker, or that hard to buy for person. By planning ahead you can enjoy more time with friends and family vs last minute runs to the mall or hunting down that hard to find item online.
The Gift Experience
As a PR professional it’s all about the experience. When planning an event, product launch or even a mailer we have a keen eye to provide something memorable and of interest to our media and influencers. Same can be said for our gift giving. This year one of the C&C crew created personalized holiday advent calendars for her sister and BFFs. The calendars included a treat (chocolate), gifts (jewelry, cosmetics) or a task (a monetary gift to donate to charity or buy a stranger a cup of coffee). The calendars have been a huge hit to-date! Look for ways to personalize each of your gifts to make it an experience for the recipient.
Do your Intel
Key to being a good PR professional is knowing the top areas of interest for the media and influencers you liaise with. That way you can provide them with content they are interested in. This rings true for gift giving too. We typically do research before buying gifts for loved ones that really capture their interests. We check out their social media or listen for little hints dropped throughout the year or watch for shops they regularly frequent. Remember tastes can change so be sure to do a little intel on your family and friends before you source your gifts.
It’s all in the Timing
We’re all down to the time crunch for the holiday and for PR professionals we appreciate the count down to any big event. We have perfectly calculated how much time we’ll need for gift sourcing, wrapping, etc. And, we usually have planned well in advance to afford for any twists or turns that may come our way. Most of us have extra, wrapped gifts on hand in case any pop-in, gift-bearing visitors come our way.
Budgets are a huge part of our daily lives as PR professionals. Therefore, it’s not hard to develop a budget and stick to it. After all the main goal is to always avoid overspending during the holidays to avoid sticker shock in the new year.
